Buying a Used Tonal

If you’re looking to buy a secondhand Tonal trainer and/or accessories from a third-party seller, there are some things you should keep in mind before closing the deal.

Factors to consider before buying a used Tonal

While the lower price tag may seem appealing, you’ll miss out on the benefits and protection that come with purchasing a Tonal and accessories directly from us.

Keen to buy a trainer secondhand? Consider the following before you get started:

  • The original purchaser’s actions and usage can impact your experience with the trainer or, worse, completely lock you out of it.

  • While our Customer Care team can verify the status of the trainer and confirm if it was stolen or misappropriated, we cannot guarantee there will not be a change in that status because of potential delays in the dispute resolution process, payment processing, and payment verification.

  • Tonal trainer purchases come with the contractual obligation to pay for twelve months of membership. If your seller hasn’t fulfilled that commitment, you will be obligated for any remaining unpaid membership months.

Questions to ask private sellers

To help protect yourself from buying a potentially compromised Tonal purchase, we’d recommend asking the seller these questions:

  • Can I come and have a look at your Tonal, before I buy it? Having a look at the trainer you want to buy in-person is really important because it allows you to see for yourself whether it works as expected and is free of any visible damage.

  • Can I see a sample of your workout history on Tonal? This helps you make sure the seller has actually used their Tonal and it works as expected.

If they don’t have workout history, it could be something to be wary of.

  • Can I see proof of your purchase? The seller should be able to show you when they bought Tonal and how long they’ve had it. This will likely be a receipt from one of our Tonal locations or their order confirmation email.

If they appear to have bought the trainer recently, especially if it’s within a few months of purchasing when they have the option to return it, you may want to be cautious. It’s possible that they’re choosing to resell because they’ve compromised their warranty and you may be purchasing a damaged unit.

  • Can I see the serial number and device ID? The serial number (located on the bottom of the trainer) and device ID can help us verify the current status of the trainer for you before you purchase

  • Can I see a picture of the Tonal where it’s currently installed? A photograph of the Tonal in its installed location (i.e. when it’s out of the box and mounted on a wall) can help ensure that the Tonal has been installed and in use.

Warranty options for a used Tonal

A key thing to consider when you buy a used Tonal is how this impacts the support we can provide you. The Tonal warranty helps ensure that  you can have the trainer serviced or replaced if needed (among other benefits).

  • Is Tonal’s warranty transferable? No, the Tonal warranty ONLY covers the original purchaser, so it won’t transfer to a secondhand owner. This means you’re not covered by Tonal’s warranty when you buy from a third-party seller, and you won’t have a warranty to rely on if something goes wrong or if you notice any defects in materials and workmanship (see the details and exclusions).

  • Can I purchase a warranty separately? No, we don’t have warranty options available for purchase. Keep in mind, Tonal is a very complex piece of equipment and should only be serviced by a trained professional. If your accessories, trainer, or other components stop working or need to be serviced, we won’t be able to support you

  • Can I purchase a warranty from another provider? Yes, you can choose to look into third-party warranty providers. But those warranties are only subject to the terms and conditions of the provider. We can’t speak to the quality of these experiences or coverage.

What happens after you buy a used Tonal

Once you buy a used trainer, you’ll need to have it installed in your home. You’ll also want to look into signing up for a membership to access the intelligent, unique features Tonal has to offer, as well as the workout content.

Here are some questions we often get asked about buying used Tonals:

  • Can I install Tonal myself?

We highly recommend purchasing an installation kit to ensure your trainer is installed safely and securely.

 The installation kit comes with:

  • All the necessary hardware to install Tonal in your desired location: You’ll have all the bits and pieces to securely install the trainer to the wall. This will ensure a safer workout experience instead of reusing the original owner’s hardware. Tonal weighs over 150lb, and with 200lb of resistance, you want to feel confident it’s mounted tightly.

  • White glove service performed by trained professionals: Given the complexity and weight of the equipment, having it professionally installed helps to keep you and the people using Tonal in your home safe and protect your purchase.

  • OPTIONAL wide mount adapter bars: Depending on the space between the studs in your preferred space, you can add an adapter to your installation kit to ensure Tonal can be installed safely.

  • Do I need to get a membership to use Tonal?

No, you don’t need to sign-up for a membership to use the trainer unless the original owner has not completed their initial 12-month commitment. If the original owner still has membership obligations from their 12-month commitment, you will be obligated to fulfill those.
