Counting Reps
Tonal is precision-engineered and designed to be the world’s most advanced strength studio and personal trainer. It uses breakthrough technology—like adaptive digital weights and A.I. learning—together with the best experts in resistance training, so you get stronger, faster.
Like a personal trainer, Tonal takes the guesswork out of strength training by optimizing every workout for you, and of course, counting every rep. The rep counter—to the right of the weight dial—shows how many reps you’ve done and the current set’s rep goal.
The number of completed reps updates automatically after each fully performed movement. The set ends after you reach the rep goal or if the weight is turned off more than halfway through the set.

Make sure to always follow the coach’s on-screen instructions on how to perform a move. Start at the top or bottom of the movement based on the video demo and maintain a full and consistent range of motion throughout the set. Not doing so may result in you not getting credit for your reps.
Pause or Advance to the Next Set
Pause the current movement mid-set or advance to the next set by putting down the Smart Handle or Smart Bar. You can also pause or advance to the next set by turning the weight off using side control buttons on the attached Smart Accessories. Whether Tonal pauses or advances the set depends on how many reps you’ve already done:
If you turn the weight off before completing 50% of the rep goal, the workout will not auto-advance to the next set. You can turn the weight back on and continue progressing in the current set.
If you turn the weight off after completing 50% of the rep goal, Tonal automatically advances you to the next set.
For example: Block 1 has Bench Press and Bicep Curls, both for 10 reps:
If you do 4/10 (less than 50%) reps of Bench Press and release the accessory or turn off the weight, then Tonal pauses your current set. You’ll be able to continue from 5/10 for your next rep.
If you do 5/10 reps (50% or more) of Bench Press and stop or turn off the weight, then Tonal interprets this as you wanting to advance to the next exercise (Bicep Curls).
If you take a pause during the second half of your set, you will have a 6-second countdown with an option to stay on your set before Tonal moves onto the next move! Click the “Next Move” button to move on, or the ‘x’ to stay on your move. Remember: even if Tonal moves on before you’re ready, you can always tap the screen and go back to complete your set. We want you to hit 100% of your movement target as much as you do!
Duration-Based Movements
Some movements, such as off-trainer and Tonal High Intensity workouts, have duration goals instead of rep goals. For example, an incline pushup set with a 60-second duration goal will count down from 60 seconds when you begin the set. The set ends when the timer reaches zero.
There are two types of duration-based movements:
Off-trainer moves, such as Incline Pushup and Lateral Mountain Climber, have a timer that counts down to zero.
Tonal High Intensity workouts have duration goals and a rep counter. The set ends when the timer runs out.
