Determining Wall Surface Thickness

It’s important to assess the thickness of your wall surface material prior to installing Tonal. Your preferred install location must fall within the outlined parameters to be considered. Here are two ways to assess your wall surface thickness.

Once Tonal is installed in your home and has updated to the latest version of software, it's time to activate your Tonal membership so you can access all of Tonal’s membership features. Please follow the steps below to create an account and activate your membership.

Method 1: Measure Door Jamb Width

An easy way to determine the thickness of your wall surface is to measure the width of a door jamb—the side-post or lining of a door—in the same wall intended for Tonal. Depending on whether your wall contains 2x4 or 2x6 studs, follow the steps below to find your wall surface thickness.

For Walls Built With 2x4 Studs

The minimum door jamb width required is 4 ½ inches. This accounts for:

  • 2x4 width: 3 ½ inches

  • Wall surface thickness on each side: ½ inches

Any measurement less than this does not meet the requirements for Tonal installation, as this would suggest that the framing is less than 2x4.

The maximum door jamb width required is 6 inches. This accounts for:

  • 2x4 width: 3 ½ inches

  • Wall surface thickness on each side: 1 ¾ inches

For Walls Built With 2x6 Studs

The minimum door jamb width required is 6 ½ inches. This accounts for:

  • 2x6 width: 5 ½ inches

  • Wall surface thickness on each side: ½ inches

The maximum door jamb width required is 8 inches. This accounts for:

  • 2x6 width: 5 ½ inches

  • Wall surface thickness on each side: 1 ¾ inches

Method 2: Drill Pilot Holes

Another way to determine the thickness of your wall surface is to drill a small pilot hole and measure by marking the drill bit. This method works for walls built with both 2x4 and 2x6 studs.

Steps to Assess Wall Thickness By Drilling Pilot Holes

1. Drill a small pilot hole through your wall surface material, stopping once you reach the face of the stud.

2. Once you have confirmed that you have drilled to the stud face, stick the drill bit in the hole and mark at the wall surface with a piece of tape.

3. Remove the drill bit from the wall. Measure the distance from the end of the drill bit to the tape marker.

Any measurement greater than 1 ¾ inches does not meet the requirements for a Tonal installation.
