Tonal workouts are designed by professionals to ensure your fitness journey is safe and effective. The goblet squat is one of our most popular variations of the squat movement, and below are a few recommendations on how to perform goblet squats safely and effectively.
While these are our recommended suggestions, it is important to note that everyone has different anatomical and biomechanical considerations, and you may choose to adjust your hands, feet, and/or body position to accommodate your personal comfort or range of motion. Getting Ready for Goblet Squats
Go over these quick basics before performing the movement to ensure your form is effective and accurate:
Foot Position- Ensure your toes are in line with the end of the arm of Tonal so that the cable is pulling straight down during the movement and not at an angle.
Holding Smart Handle- Hold the Smart Handle by both straps to ensure optimal grip. Make sure your thumbs are wrapped around the top of your handles and position it in front of your chest. The image below represents the recommended grip for Tonal’s goblet squat movement.
Using BCM- You may choose to attach the Bar Control Module (BCM) to your Smart Handle if you find it more comfortable than depressing the buttons on the sides of the Smart Handle. The BCM will allow you to turn the weight on/off easily. Please note the use of BCM while performing this movement is optional.

Follow this step-by-step guide to perform the movement:
With the Smart Handle placed at your chest, stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and toes slightly turned out. Engage your core and squeeze your shoulder blades together.
Inhale, then send hips back and bend knees to lower down into a squat, like you’re sitting back into a chair.
Exhale, and push through your heels to stand tall and return to the starting position. Repeat.
Tonal uses advanced AI to suggest an appropriate weight for the number of reps you are attempting to complete. However, if you feel the weight is too heavy for you or you tend to find this movement difficult, you should decrease the weight so you can complete your last rep.
