How to Make the Most of Tonal in a Small Space: 4 Smart Hacks

We already know Tonal is a powerhouse for small spaces compared to traditional gym equipment, but what if you’ve installed your trainer in a high-traffic area, or your setup doesn’t quite meet our ideal installation guidelines?

No need to worry. With a little creativity and the flexibility of Tonal’s expansive movement library, you can still crush your workouts, even in tight or unconventional spaces.

Here are four smart hacks to help you make Tonal work for your space.

Hack #1: Swap in Bodyweight-Only Moves When Needed

Bodyweight exercises are a great way to stay on track, especially if you're working out in a smaller area or can't use Tonal's arms to their full range.

They rarely require more space than your mat, and can be done virtually anywhere in your home. Try moves like:

  • Air Squats

  • Push-Ups

  • Glute Bridges

  • Planks

  • Bear Crawls

These exercises help maintain strength, stability, and mobility without needing additional equipment.

Hack #2: Focus on Single-Arm Movements

If space is limited, single-arm moves are your best friend. They allow you to adjust your position more freely and use just one Tonal arm at a time.

Here are a few effective options:

  • Goblet Squat

  • Half Kneeling Single-Arm Row

  • Overhead Triceps Extension

  • Seated Pallof Press

Hack #3: Use Low- and Mid-Angle Moves in Low-Ceiling Spaces

If your ceiling height is below our recommended minimum (7’10”), that doesn’t mean you can’t use Tonal effectively. Many strength movements don’t require high arm angles.

When browsing workouts or building your own, prioritize moves that involve mid- or low-arm angles, such as:

  • Chest Press

  • Deadlifts

  • Bent-Over Rows

  • Front Squats

For exercises that typically require more vertical range (like overhead presses), you can modify or perform them kneeling or seated to fit your space.

Hack #4: Mix Up Your Modality

Tonal offers more than just strength training. Mixing in different types of workouts keeps things fresh and lets you use your space more flexibly.

Try these space-efficient formats:

  • Yoga and Pilates – Improve flexibility and core strength

  • Recovery and Mobility – Support your performance and longevity

  • Dance or HIIT sessions – Low-equipment, high-energy

  • Core and Balance workouts – Perfect for small areas

These alternatives keep you active even when your environment limits the use of the trainer arms.
