How to Set Up Generic Moves

Even with a selection of hundreds of moves in Tonal’s Movement Library, you might still find your standby moves missing.

Generic Moves allows you to use Tonal to complete your favorite exercises, whether you can find them on Tonal or not!

What are Generic Moves on Tonal? (Click to expand)

Generic Moves are movements that you set up yourself on Tonal, in addition to the extensive library of movements we already have. These moves fall under four categories:

  • Handle

  • Bar

  • Rope

  • Ankle straps

Each category describes the Smart Accessory you’ll be using to complete the move.

For example, if you’d like to add a bicep curl variation, choose a Handle Move to work each arm independently, or select the Bar to engage both arms simultaneously.

You can create Generic Moves to add to any workout on Tonal, including your Custom Workouts!

What do I need to know if it’s my first time using Generic Moves on Tonal? (Click to expand)
  • Safety first: Remember that Tonal’s safety standards and warranty only specifically cover moves already found in the official library. Always listen to your body and proceed with extra caution when performing custom movements.

  • Select your accessory: Choose the accessory that matches your movement goal: Use Handles for independent arm work, the Bar for simultaneous engagement, or Ropes/ Ankle Straps for specific isolation.

  • Find your baseline: Since Generic Moves do not offer automatic weight suggestions, start with a light weight to find your baseline before increasing the load.

  • Input manual data: Be prepared to manually enter your reps and weight settings, as these moves do not come with pre-set titles or data.

What else do I need to know about Generic Moves? (Click to expand)
What’s the difference between alternating every rep and doing all reps on one side first?

Think of a bicep curl. Alternating every rep means you’re going back and forth between your left and right arm every rep. The other option is completing all ten (10) reps on one side, then switching to do ten (10) on the other. I can’t alternate hands using the bar.

Why is that a move setup option?

While you cannot alternate hands while using the bar, you can still hold the bar and alternate your legs, such as when you do a Barbell Alternating Lunge.
