Tonal’s smart arms connect to the trainer using an active Bluetooth signal. On rare occasions, the arms can become cross-linked—meaning the rotate button on one arm controls the opposite side.

Don’t worry—it’s a simple fix! Here’s how to troubleshoot and get your arms back in sync.

Before You Start

Make sure both arms have working batteries. Low or dead batteries can cause connectivity issues.

How to Resolve Cross-Linked Arms

Follow the steps below to re-link your arms properly and restore normal function. This process usually takes just a few minutes and doesn’t require any special tools.

  1. Swipe down from the top of Tonal’s screen to open the Settings menu.

  2. Select the Tonal icon.

  3. In the pop-up menu, select Arms and Track.

  4. Tap Relink Left Arm, and immediately tap Cancel.

  5. Repeat steps 1-4 with the Relink Right Arm button.

  6. Return to the Arms and Track menu.

  7. On the left side of the menu, tap Relink, and wait for the arm to fully link.

  1. Repeat steps 6 and 7 for the right arm.

  2. Press and hold the arm rotate button on each arm. The on-screen icons unlock and turn white, and the Tonal arms unlock with a click.
