Installation Requirements: Stud Build Out

You might be here because you want to be proactive and build out your installation space, or you had a failed installation because your space didn’t meet the installation requirements. We understand that every space is unique, and we're here to help you figure out the best setup for your Tonal.

Here are some images to give you an idea of what a finished stud-build out might look like!

What to consider before you build

Tonal mounts on a set of two studs—either wood or metal studs with minimum dimensions of 2 inch x 4 inch—or solid, poured or bare concrete wall.

Any work done in your space needs to meet the minimum requirements of your local building codes, so we recommend teaming up with a professional contractor to make any changes to your installation space.

When the contractor finishes their work, we’ll need to see pictures of your build-out to complete a review and make sure we can install Tonal on it before we schedule your installation.

In fact, we’d recommend reviewing your build-out plans with us before you make any changes to your space. The process will likely be much smoother for you because this way we can confirm whether your plans meet the installation requirements, meaning there won’t be any surprises on installation day.

Installation requirements for stud build-outs

For a sturdy and safe installation, you’ll need:

  • At least two continuous two (2) inch x four (4) inch studs. These studs should be spaced 16 inches apart, running from floor to ceiling, measured from the center of each stud.

  • To face the two-inch side of the studs forward. Don’t place the studs flat with the wider side in front–this isn’t supported.

  • Remember to secure those studs to both the floor and the ceiling. No wobbly business here!

  • To beef up the support a bit if you’re using metal studs, you'll need two extra 2x4s. Position one 2x4 on the left side of the left stud, and the other on the inside of the right stud.

We know words can only do so much, so take a look at this handy diagram to see exactly what we're talking about:

By sticking to these guidelines, you have the best chance at laying down a rock-solid foundation for your Tonal installation and making sure everything is structurally sound.
