Maximizing Surrounding Space Requirements
If you had Tonal installed in a space that requires some modifications to your training, don’t worry–we’ve got you covered!
With a little experimentation, a dash of planning, and a sprinkle of ingenuity, you’ll be training your strongest before you know it! In the meantime, here are some ways you can “hack” your small space to get the most out of Tonal.
Find your groove by experimenting with different moves to find out which of your go-to moves work in your space, on Tonal!
First-time Tonal users often experience a short learning curve when they begin training with us–this is to be expected, especially if your first time working out is your first time even touching Tonal.
If you just got your new Tonal installed in a space that isn’t totally in line with our installation requirements, it might be even more challenging to get the hang of it. So make it your mission to learn about what moves you can and can’t complete in your space.
Some moves, such as lateral pulldowns, might be hard for a tall person to complete in a space with a low ceiling. But you may be more successful completing them while kneeling on the floor. Just make sure you use a mat to protect those knees!
Unlock your strongest self by using arm angles to modify certain moves.
Not every move on Tonal requires the arms to be locked in on the highest setting. Some moves can be completed at a middle to low angle.
To find out what moves don’t need Tonal’s arms to be at a high angle, you can simply select the “Middle Angle” and “Low Angle” filters when you search for moves on your trainer, or the mobile app.
Plus, you can complete some moves with your arm height one notch down from the very top. However if you choose to make this type of modification, make sure to check that you can still complete the move with good form before you start your workout.
Explore our impressive library of moves to find limited-space options.
Plenty of our workouts include moves you can do off-Tonal, with limited space, or only use one arm to maximize your space. Here are a couple examples to get you started:

Harness the power of Tonal’s Custom Workouts feature.
Making your own custom workouts and training splits can be a great way to keep track of all of the moves that are compatible with your unique space. Utilize the filters when you plan your workouts on the trainer or mobile app so you can be sure to plan a workout that is appropriate to your space.
